Green Is the New Red

A draft of the Green New Deal calls for “basic income programs,” “universal health care programs,” and “cooperative and public ownership.” What does any of this have to do with shortening that red line on our thermometers? Read my column @ The American Spectator on how a Rorschach test quality colors the “solutions” to global warming in that they all invariably involve ideas advanced by the Left for decades without previous reference to the environment.

A Big Day

Today marks the day I have been waiting a decade for. Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco, my sixth book, officially becomes available today. I toiled over it, off and on, for the last decade. That's a record for me, and one I do not seek to ever surpass. The writing came mostly in my attic. The research primarily took place at the California Historical Society, San Francisco Public Library, and Library of Congress. I interviewed about 30 eyewitnesses to history, including one of three people still alive—and one of nine total 40 years ago—in Jonestown when the killing began, Dan White’s chief of staff who detailed a startling confession of violence that his boss made to him, and former friends and rivals of Harvey Milk who shared his homosexuality but not a fondness for him. It got really interesting for me. I hope reading Cult City proves as interesting for you. Please buy it. Please read it. And if you finish, I hope you write a little about what you read at Amazon or Barnes & Noble’s website.

When Did the Democratic Party Become Antifa?

“Rudeness is the weak man’s imitation of strength,” reflected longshoreman philosopher Eric Hoffer. The interruptions, arrests, threats, shouting, and other unpleasantries of the last month affirm this wisdom. Read my column @ the American Spectator on how a party lacking in numbers turned up the volume to compensate for its shortcomings.

Never That Great, Huh?

“We’re not going to make America great again,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo informed this week. “It was never that great.” The airplane, the light bulb, the computer, a polio vaccine, rock ‘n’ roll, and chocolate chip cookies fall short of great? Read my article @ The American Spectator.

Captain Ahab Aims Harpoons at ... Trump's Tweets

Special Counsel Robert Mueller wants to question the president of the United States about his tweets. As far as fishing expeditions go, this one evokes one such adventure told 167 years ago. “But shall this crazed old man be tamely suffered to drag a whole ship’s company down to doom with him?” Ahab fixates on the whale and loses sight of the mandate of his mission, the collateral damage that his monomania unleashes, and, ultimately, reality itself. Read my column @ the American Spectator that observes no Starbuck sails on the Badship Bob Mueller

The Witch Hunters

Congratulations America,” Donald Trump tweeted Thursday. “[W]e are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History.” Tituba, spectrally and respectfully, disagrees. Cotton Mathers forever walk the earth in search of witches to destroy. The latest episode in witch huntery fixates on nonexistent collusion between the Russian government and the Americans seeking to capture the American presidency. Read my column @ the American Spectator on the crimes of the witch hunters.

Bigmouth Strikes Again

When Morrissey wrote songs such as “Margaret on the Guillotine” and “Meat Is Murder,” the music press adored him. Now that he supports Brexit, calls the “racist” tag a way of tapping out on a debate, and laments London becoming Londonistan, the critics not only criticize — they want to press the mute button for the benefit of us all. Hang the DJ, indeed. Read my article @ the American Spectator on Morrissey not caring about your opinions about his opinions.

Art Bell, RIP

zMy favorite Art Bell moment came in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. A caller offered his unsolicited advice to the U.S. military on how to best respond to the attacks. He earnestly suggested dying the clouds above Afghanistan with a sort of red food coloring. Our ability to make it rain blood, presumably, would ward off thoughts of a future attack. Another host might mock; Bell marveled. Read my remembrance @ the American Spectator of the last great A.M. radio personality.

Hoarders & the People Who Love Them

I spent a weekend earlier this month trudging through an untelevised episode of Hoarders. The home lacked electricity. The bathtub overflowed with books. One could spy the attic through the holes in the second-floor ceiling and the sky through the roof. Stacks of magazines and gizmos and gadgets from an earlier era constantly bumped into me without so much as an “excuse me.” Behind the stove, a cache of 1981 newspapers peeked out of their hiding place. This served as a cleanout masquerading as an estate sale. And, after making numerous return visits to the jaw-dropping property, I began to wonder what, exactly, separates the deceased seller from the enthusiastic buyers. Read my article @ the American Spectator on why the picker pays for the hoarder's mental illness.

Hillary Havisham

Hillary Clinton reliving her presidential election sounds like Miss Havisham talking about her wedding day. They both, one senses, harbored great expectations that became great resentments. Read my article @ the American Spectator on Clinton trashing Trump voters in India.
